This
championship course lies in lush green mountainous terrain, in the foothills
of Northern Thailand, amid an enchanting forest of golden teak trees. Located
only 25 km east of Chiang Mai, this nature sanctuary 18-hole International Standard
Golf Course is reached in only 20-30 minutes by car. Wide undulating fairways
and large greens make this course a dream come true for golfers and their families
and a pleasure to play for experienced and beginner golfers alike.
The course is set in a spectacular natural valley surrounded
by
beautiful rolling hills. Thousands of mature native trees, together with well
designed traditional-style buildings gives the golf course its unique, distinctly
Northern character. Its contoured terrain, interspersed with creeks and water
hazards, offers a challenge to golfers of all handicaps. The clever use of bunkering
and strategic placement of water hazards make it a necessity to be
accurate
if a good score is to be achieved. This is exemplified at signature. Hole number
nine, where the tee shot needs to be 'placed' between water hazards on both
sides of the fairway, followed by a long carry over the big pond to a sloping
green. Health Spa is also located nearby with a view over the Golf Course.

This
championship course offers an unusually tough challenge. Green Valley
offers 10 Par 4's 7200 yards of wide open fairways, plenty of bunkers and tough
water hazards. This beautiful and scenic course is a popular haven for local
and visiting golfers alike. Definitely one to play during a visit to Chiang
Mai. Situated 15 km North of Chiang Mai, this course is within easy
reach from downtown Chiang Mai.
The course
sits in the lowlands sloping towards the Ping River. It is a long testing course,
with
water coming into play on almost every hole. Most holes are heavily bunkered,
making play even more demanding. The fairways and greens are usually in very
good condition. There is not much shade on the course, so most players are very
thirsty by the time they reach the 'nineteenth'. This course is ideally played
in the early morning or late afternoon. The huge clubhouse, a model of excellence,
provides first-class amenities. Among these is a newly launched health Spa.

Located
only a stone's throw from the center of Chiang Mai, and is one of Thailand's
finest old style golf courses. Also located within the Golf club is Chiang Mai's
only horse racing track and shooting range. Lanna consists of three
9 hole courses each with its own distinctly unique design style. The Golf course
skirts many large lakes, ponds, and crosses numerous bubbling streams and canals
which provide each course with its fair share of water hazards.
Recently
upgraded, this tough (rating 73.7) but enjoyable layout is a must for visitors
to Chiang Mai. There are beautiful panoramic views of the hills from every hole
and of Chiang Mai's famed Doi Suthep Mountain temple on the mountain top to
the west.
The
fairways are lined with mature trees, offering welcomed shade, but difficult
rough. The refurbished greens run true, and the watering system ensures lush
fairways throughout the year. This is a classic, natural golf course which no
golfer should miss playing. There is a nice clubhouse here and the Northern
welcome to visitors is rather special.

A
gem of a Golf Course. Located 35 km from Chiang Mai center, this lovely course
is set amongst wooded hills, and cool placid streams. Designed by five-time
British Open champion Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge, with the whole
family in mind, this course offers a hotel and full leisure facilities.
The course uses elements from a
British
links style course, including bumpy gentle-rolling fairways, pot bunkers, and
closely mowed areas around the greens. It offers some challenging holes
for both amateur and professional player, while keeping in harmony with its
beautiful surroundings.
The
course is set in a beautiful valley with magnificent breathtaking scenery. It's
filled with the songs of birds and thousands of flowering trees erupting in
different fragrances and colors every month of the year. Waterfalls, trail,
streams and all kinds of trees are surrounded by mountains. The high altitude
provides a cooler, less humid climate, sweet refreshing
air
and gentle breezes. Strategic positioning of fairway and greenside bunkers calls
for accurate play, rather than long hitting. However, on some holes distances
to the greens are deceptive and there is a tendency to under club. There is
not a poor hole on the golf course. At the finish of the round there is a beautiful
view towards the clubhouse. The club has a 60-room hotel.

This beautiful

Altogether, there are five sets of tees at this eighteen-hole layout and players
can be forgiven
if
they are distracted by the background of mountainous scenery. There are eight
OB holes, numerous water hazards and lovely flowers adorning the surrounds.
This young course is maturing rapidly, with excellent maintenance and conditioning
of the fairways and greens, an abundance of lakes and streams bordering many

Only
9 kilometers from the center of Chiang Rai the Santiburi Country Club
was Chiang Rai's first golf course, and is considered one of Thailand's
and Asia's finest. This course, which is set into the contours of a valley,
is excellent conceived and conditioned. The course winds beneath a canopy of
magnificent shading trees, across crystal clear lakes and streams, reflecting
turquoise skies and pearl white clouds above, and the lush green foothills and
mountains. 11 par 4's and long fairways makes the Santiburi challenging for
the novice and experienced golfer alike.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., this course is world class, featuring a
wide range of sloping lies and natural hazards. Surrounded by distant hills,
the golf course is set on low hilly land. At holes 2,3 & 4 players have to play
alongside a huge lake. Most greens are well protected by bunkers and there are
several very good dog-leg holes, particularly the par-5 eighteenth, where
players have to negotiate water on the right side of the fairway on the approach
shot to the green. Even with its world class fairways, this course is playable
and enjoyable for golfers of every skill level. The clubhouse is very agreeable,
and like the whole club an exquisite example of understated elegance,
with full facilities including a Spa and chalet style resort makes this course
a must while in Chiang Rai. Santiburi offers an aesthetic feast for the golf
connoisseur.

Other Northern Golf Courses
The North
is ideal for a golf holiday, with its long mountain ranges, wide valleys and spectacular
jungle scenery within easy reach of culture-rich cities, and pleasant weather year-round.
Because of the altitude, it is cooler than other regions, with temperature
sometimes in the
single digits (by night) in the cool months of December and January. The regional capital of
Chiang Mai, 700 kms from Bangkok, has the biggest number of golf courses, most with
magnificent views of surrounding hills and valleys. Chiang Rai, three hours' drive
to the North, boasts a number of championship courses in picturesque settings. Towns
in the lower North offer small gems of courses owned and run by EGAT, in areas surrounding
its dams, with moderate albeit comfortable accommodation nearby.
Besides splendid
golf, the North offers unique cultural charms. A separate Kingdom for centuries,
these provinces have their own distinct heritage: architecture, arts and crafts,
dialect and cuisine. Chiang Mai, capital of the Lanna Kingdom for 700 years, is
home to flourishing cottage industries: silk and fabrics, silverware, pewter, lacquer
ware, celadon pottery, wood carving, to name just a few. Visits to craftsmen' villages
near the provincial capital are a must for shoppers and non-shoppers alike. For
outdoorsmen, the forest and mountains of the North offer great appeal, with choice
of hiking, hill tribe visits, river rafting, and jungle treks, among others.

This
gem of a golf course can lay claim to being one of the finest in Asia. Set on
the lower slope of a hill below the dam (named after His Majesty the King),
the scenery magnificent trees and beautiful flowers and shrubs, will distract
most golfers from their game! Bunkering is minimal, but players are faced with
a wide variety of shots up, down and across the slopes. Adding to the
enjoyment are drives played from elevated tees to valley shaped fairways.
There are six par-three holes, seven par fours and five par fives.
Playing each and every one of them is a pleasure. Chalet-style
accommodations are available. By road, it is about a three-hour drive from
Chiang Mai.
