MCAD - Microsoft Certified Application Developer

Microsoft's certification for component and application developers using Microsoft technology.

A candidate for the Microsoft Certified Application Developer for Microsoft .NET, or MCAD.NET, has demonstrated skills in developing and maintaining department-level applications, components, Web or desktop clients or back-end data services using Microsoft .NET technologies. Microsoft says it created this title based on results of a job skills survey, which showed that the certification program itself neglected a segment of developers who wanted a way to prove capabilities in writing code and developing programs at the departmental or component level.

The MCAD distinguishes itself from the MCSD in that the MCAD doesn't define solutions or create specifications for customers or design the system software architecture. (As such, the 70-300 Analyzing Requirements and Defining .NET Solutions Architecture is not a requirement for the MCAD track.)

The primary candidate for an MCAD.NET probably has a job title such as application developer, programmer, software developer, software engineer, software applications engineer, or technical consultant.

How to Earn Your MCAD

The MCAD consists of passing three tests—1 Web Application Development or Windows Application Development exam, 1 Web Services and Server Component exam, and 1 elective.

Core Exams (2 Exams Required)

To fulfill the core certification requirements, pass one exam focused on either Web Application Development or XML Windows Application Development in the language of your choice. Then pass one Web Services and Server Components exam.

Elective Exams (1 Exams Required)

In addition to the core exam requirements, you must also pass one elective exam that provides proof of expertise with a specific Microsoft server product.

If you use Exam 70-305 or 70-315 to satisfy the core exam requirement, you may use either Exam 70-306 or 70-316 as an elective. If you use Exam 70-306 or 70-316 to satisfy the core exam requirement, you may use either Exam 70-305 or 70-315 as an elective.
