MCDBA - Microsoft Certified Database Administrator
A premier certification for DBAs who use Microsoft SQL Server as the primary back-end for serving up data

The Microsoft Certified Database Administrator credential is the premier certification for people who implement and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases. You should consider it if you're involved in developing physical database designs and logical data models; creating physical databases; creating data services by using Transact-SQL; managing and maintaining databases; configuring and managing security; monitoring and optimizing databases; and installing and configuring SQL Server.

Candidates for this certification typically hold these titles: database administrator, database analyst, and database developer.

You should have at least a year of experience working with SQL Server.

MCDBA on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Certification Requirements

Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) on Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 candidates need to pass three core exams and one elective exam that provide a valid and reliable measure of technical proficiency and expertise in the implementation and administration of SQL Server databases.

Microsoft is integrating Microsoft Windows® XP Professional and Microsoft .NET Enterprise Servers exams into the MCDBA on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 certification. Individuals should continue to pursue training and certification in Windows 2000, as skills acquired for Windows 2000 will be highly relevant to and provide a critical foundation for Windows XP Professional and .NET Enterprise Servers.

MCDBAs on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 will not be required to pass Windows XP Professional/.NET Enterprise Servers exams to retain MCDBA certification. The Windows 2000 exams and the Windows XP/.NET Enterprise Servers exams for the MCDBA on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 certification are expected to remain available concurrently.

The certification requires you to pass three core exams and one elective.

1 Candidates who passed both Windows NT 4.0 Exams 70–067 and 70–068 fulfilled the networking system core exam requirement (these exams are no longer available):

  • Exam 70–067: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 (this exam is no longer available).

  • Exam 70–068: Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise (this exam is no longer available).

2 Candidates who passed Windows NT 4.0 Exams 70–067, 70–068, and 70–073 had the option to take the comprehensive Exam 70–240, Microsoft Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam for MCPs Certified on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. (This exam is no longer available) Candidates who passed Exam 70–240 received credit for Exams 70–210, 70–215, 70–216, and 70–217. In the MCDBA track, Exam 70-240 counts as both a core exam (70–215) and an elective exam (70–216). Generally, an exam that can be used as either a core or an elective counts only once toward a certification. Exam 70–240 in the MCDBA track is an exception.

3 In the following combinations, candidates will receive credit for only one of the two exams: 70-305 or 70-315, 70-306 or 70-316, 70-310 or 70-320.

You'll receive several benefits when you become an MCDBA:
